The Abandoned Woman series began with a discovery of a woman's portrait, printed on gelatin silver, left behind in a used art supply store. She looked like she could have been a model from the 1980s and I brought her home. I manipulated her image across a series of collage and mixed media works, cutting and layering until the pieces crept beyond the boundaries of her original 8x10 portrait. The more I worked with her, the more familiar she became. The more familiar she became, the more I realized how little I actually knew about her, and how much I had already assumed. We are a culture practiced in the viewing, manipulation, and distortion of women's images, often without their knowledge, rarely with their consent. My work asks viewers to sit with that discomfort. To notice the moment a woman's face becomes intimate. To question what they think they know about a woman's inner world, her history, her desires.
